How to Choose a Beginner’s Smoking Pipe

Whether you come from the world of Cuban cigars or are relatively new to smoking altogether, you’ll quickly find that the world of pipe smoking is much larger than you expect.

Pipe smoking is arguably the oldest form of smoking on the planet, with its origins traceable to the first recordings of tobacco being smoked for recreation across the world. Since then, pipe smoking has become an art form, one embodied by the apparatus itself.

Smoking pipes are available in all manner of shapes, sizes and materials, allowing smokers to fine-tune their experience exactly how they want. However, for beginners, it can be hard to know where to look.

For beginners – and for most smokers – it’s often recommended to choose a briar wood pipe. While smoking pipes are also made of other materials, notably meerschaum and clay, briar wood offers the most stable experience and is less likely to break due to heat or misuse.

Look out for premium briar wood smoking pipes as these will have the highest-quality wood, making them more reliable and long-lasting.

Beyond that, the shape of the pipe will often come down to personal preference. The two main considerations are the size of the bowl (which allows for more tobacco and a longer smoke) and the length of the pipe (a longer pipe resulting in cooler smoke).

For beginners, we recommend simply choosing a premium briar wood pipe that you like the look of, so long as the length isn’t too short, as this can cause the smoke to be too hot for a newbie.
